Doctor, accomplice held over attempt to sell unborn baby

A doctor based in Umunnachi, Anambra State, has been arrested with another man by the police in Delta State on a charge of being involved in an attempt to sell an unborn child.

The police, who paraded the two men before newsmen in Asaba on Saturday, said they had arranged to sell the unborn baby for N70,000

But the doctor, Dr. Daniel Ikebuilo, who owns and runs Ikemefuna Hospital and Maternity, Umunnachi, denied the charge.

The other man paraded with Ikebuilo was one Uwandu Kelechi.

Ikebuilo said he could defend his innocence before any court, adding that he had been practising for the past 20 years after graduating from the Obafemi Awolowo University.

He said, “It is just allegation that I have a case with the police in Anambra over child trafficking, that matter is in court at the moment. This person (Kelechi) claims that he brings pregnant women to me to deliver and sell but it is not true. I have been practising for 20 years. I have written my statement, whatever it is, I am ready to defend myself because my hands are clean.”

Acting Public Relations Officer of the command, Charles Muka, who paraded the suspects, said investigation was in progress.

Muka said the chairman of Issele-Azagba vigilance group, Kingsley Mordi, had reported that a pregnant woman, one Rosemary Chukwu, was brought to Issele-Azagba by the said Kelechi who promised to help her out of her condition.

“However, she later discovered that the said Kelechi is a member of a child trafficking syndicate and that he was making efforts to sell the unborn baby for N70,000. This prompted the victim to raise the alarm leading to the arrest of Kelechi.”
