AS claim the Gunners are prepared to shatter their transfer record to recruit the Frenchman, who Arsene Wenger believes is capable of spearheading a title challenge for his side.
Arsenal’s current transfer record, the fee they paid for Mesut Ozil in the summer of 2013, stands at £42.5m.
But the north Londoners have reportedly set aside £45.8m to splash out on former Lyon hitman Benzema.
With Theo Walcott’s questionable injury record and Danny Welbeck’s poor strike rate, Wenger believes he is in need of a world class forward to partner or play instead of Olivier Giroud, who is yet to convince supporters that he has the star quality to fire Arsenal to Premier League success.
Benzema only recently signed a contract extension at the Bernabeu until 2019 and Wenger is well aware of how difficult it will be to pull off a deal.
Benzema started his career at Lyon before signing for Real Madrid in 2009, where he has scored 133 goals in 281 appearances.
