Super Eagles’ Manager Gernot Rohr surprisingly left out key players for the team’s training camp and friendly match against Corsica in France. The coach, on Monday, released a 25-man list with big stars such as Captain Mikel Obi, his vice Ogenyi Onazi, Chelsea star Victor Moses and Kenneth Omeruo conspicuously missing.
According to a media statement from the Nigeria Football federation, the three-time African champions will open camp in Corsica on May 24 and then play against the Corsica Senior team two days later, before moving camp to Paris, capital of France for the second phase of the camping programme ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
It is believed that the list was for the training camp and the friendly game as the big stars are expected to be back when the final squad for the AFCON tie is unveiled later in the month.
A source said Onazi was omitted because the Turkish League would end on June 3 same goes for Omeruo while Moses is allowed to help Chelsea as they aim to win the FA Cup. Mikel is still nursing an injury but could be win fitness race ahead of the tie.
Injury has ruled out first choice goalkeeper Carl Ikeme of Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Championship, leaving home–based Ikechukwu Ezenwa to fight it out with fellow former junior international Dele Alampasu for the slot between the sticks. Nigeria Professional Football League stars Alhassan Ibrahim, Stephen Odey and Sikiru Olatunbosun also won their first invitations to the national team.
